About the Dominican Republic...
A tapestry of Spanish, French, Haitian, and African influences, the Dominican Republic is one of three nations on the island of Hispaniola, which is part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are occupied by two countries, Saint Martin being the other. The island was discovered in December 1492 by famed Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus.
Santo Domingo is the oldest city in the New World, where the settlement of all the Americas began. The city is located on the south coast of the Dominican Republic, about mid way between the western border with Haiti and the eastern coastline. |
